2011-12 NHL Projections: Goalies

Top 60 Goalies to pick in 2011-12

This season, there are a lot of top goalies to select from.  In addition to the usual cast of characters, there are some new top keepers like Pekka Rinne out there.  Aside from the old and the new reliable picks, there may be a couple of goalies you may wish to avoid.  For one reason or another such as age, or a younger, skilled back-up, ice time may be on the decline for some of the league's elder statesmen.

One of the best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) candidates for a decline this year may be Tim Thomas.  He had a dream season last year, leading the Boston Bruins to the Stanley Cup.

Backing the Bruins to be one of the best defensive teams all season, and having the best statistical season for a goaltender in recent memory is something quite tough to repeat.

Thomas is no spring chicken, and while last season defied logic and history, do not expect lightning to strike twice.

It was no fluke, and Thomas is an excellent goaltender, but his time in the spotlight will encourage great analysis of his form.  He’ll be less of a mystery this year, and let’s not forget the Stanley Cup hangover.  So who will take his place on draft day?  Here's our list of the top 5 picks this year, and projections for 60 goalies this season.  Enjoy.

Top 5 Goalies This Year

1. Henrik Lundqvist
The big Swede will lead an improved Rangers’ squad, and perhaps a top seed in the Eastern Conference.  If they can prey on their division’s weaker teams, Lundqvist could be a fantasy gold mine.

2. Carey Price
Price emerged last season and there is no reason to believe that he cannot add to those numbers this year and compete for the Vezina Trophy.  He’ll support a strong Montreal squad and see 65 plus games.

3. Ryan Miller
Miller will benefit from a healthy squad in front of him, and a greater supporting cast.  Led by the acquisitions of Ehrhoff and Regher, Buffalo’s defense will be much improved, as will their attack up front.

4. Roberto Luongo
Despite having his share of critics, his statistics do not lie.  Four shutouts in the Playoffs, and one win away from a Cup.  Another Vezina nomination and Jennings Trophy demonstrate his stellar season.

5. Pekka Rinne
Rinne nearly won the Vezina trophy last year, and the Preds defense-first mindset and excellent rearguards will only help his numbers this time out.  Expect big things, and excellent numbers.
