Doughty heads list of slow starters
Some are forwards, some are defencemen. They all impact your fantasy hockey team, or office hockey pool. Here are the top ten slow starters this season as determined by PuckWatch.
1. D Tyler Myers - BUF
Myers, the reigning NHL rookie of the year, has but two points through eight games, and is a horrendous -9 in that span. He may be turning the corner, so hopefully he avoids the sophomore jinx.
2. D Jay Bouwmeester - CAL
Bouwmeester finally tallied an assist in Calgary's last game, but that was his first point of the season after 7 games. With Dion Phaneuf gone, many expected Bouwmeester to regain his offensive flair and great play shown with his days in Florida. Flames fans are still waiting.
3. F Rick Nash - CBS
Rick Nash is buried down his team's scoring leaders, with only three points after seven games, and a team worst -4 rating.
4. D Drew Doughty - LA
Doughty has struggled, only recording one assist in five games. As if matters couldn't be worse early in the year for fantasy owners, Doughty suffered an injury in his latest game and will be sidelined for at least a week.
5. F Zach Parise - NJ
Parise should see some great numbers with year with Ilya Kovalchuk playing a full season with Parise. Early in the year though, Parise has struggled with only three points in seven games.
6. F Alexei Kovalev - OTT
Kovalev has recorded one assist in seven games this year and has a team worst +/- rating. His best days are behind him but even this is unexpected.
7. D Chris Pronger / Kimmo Timonen - PHI
Hard to differentiate these two looking at a scoresheet. Neither of the Flyers top two blueliners had recorded a point until tonight when Pronger grabbed an assist. Hard to believe the Flyers have only four assists from their entire defence corps all season - and no goals.
8. F Simon Gagne - TB
Hard to imagine any player having a worse start to their year than Simon Gagne. Despite the Lightning opening with a 5-1 record, Gagne has yet to record a point in the first six games of the season, and is a team worst -8. To top matters off, he was scratched for the last game, apparently suffering from an injury. This may explain his woeful start.
9. D Mike Green - WAS
Green is usually the fantasy stud from the blue line, but he's only managed to collect one assist so far this year in five games. For a point per game player, this certainly won't do. He was injured for a couple of games as well and returned Saturday night, but only played a handful of minutes.
10. F Nicklas Backstrom - WAS
Perhaps expectations are a bit high for Backstrom, but four points after eight games is a bit less than expected for someone who should approach the 100 point mark for the season. Skating with Ovechkin should help you collect a lot of points, but so far this year Backstrom has not been very lucky.
